The American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects the civil rights of persons with disabilities. This legislation prohibits discrimination of persons with disabilities in employment and areas of public accommodations, including nearly every business from stores and shops, restaurants, bars, service establishments, theaters, hotels, recreation facilities, private museums, schools and others. The Department of Justice has the ultimate responsibility for enforcing ADA laws. In practice, the actual assessment of signs is usually handled by local code inspectors. The ADA establishes standards to ensure signs are easy to read and understand for people who are blind or visually impaired. ADA sign standards address the height and placement of signs so they are in locations that are easy to see and read, use of braille or tactile letters and pictograms so those who use their fingers to “see” can read signs, easy to read colors and fonts so those with visual impairments can clearly see the contrasts of dark and light even if they can’t see the color or easily make out visual details.

ADA Sign Requirements

There are rules and regulations on how to manufacture and install ADA signs so It is important to ensure that you are working with a knowledgeable sign manufacturer and installer, simple mistakes in the installation process can cause significant delays and additional expenses if signs are installed incorrectly or not to code. All permanent spaces and rooms must have ADA compliant signs in place and are required for elevators, fire exits, stairways, room/floor numbers or letters, conference rooms, storage rooms, changing rooms, exam rooms, electrical rooms, break rooms, IT rooms, mechanical rooms, utility rooms, restrooms, kitchens and more. Tactile text descriptors are required if the sign contains pictograms that identify a permanent space or room. ADA signs with braille and tactile elements should be installed on the latch side of the door to the room being identified. ADA signs should measure no lower than 48 inches from the floor to the bottom of the lowest row of text, and no higher than 60 inches from the floor to the top of the highest text. ADA signs should not be mounted directly on a door except for double doors with one active leaf, a sign should be installed on the inactive leaf. When there is no wall space available, an ADA sign may also be mounted directly on a door if it closes automatically.  Below are basic requirements for ADA signs, there are specific fonts, braille, color contrast and specific pictogram sizes that must be followed in order to pass inspection.

ADA font requirement
ADA braille requirement
ADA color requirement
ADA pictogram requirement

Some signs are not required to be ADA compliant, including directories, company names, logos and temporary signs (used for 7 days or less). Keep in mind that “ADA compliant” does not always mean raised letters or braille. Wayfinding, directional, suspended overhead or flag mounted signs do not need to have raised letters, pictograms or braille but are still required to comply with text height and font regulations and must be installed according to certain guidelines. A good practice to follow is that any permanent room or space identification sign should be ADA compliant.
